Phase stability of colloidal mixtures of spheres and rods

چکیده

We determined the phase boundaries of aqueous mixtures containing colloidal rod-like fd-viruses and polystyrene spheres using diffusing-wave spectroscopy compared results with free volume theory predictions. Excluded interactions in rods lead to mediated depletion interactions. The strength range this attractive interaction depend on concentrations particles, length L diameter D rods, radius R spheres. At strong enough attraction, leads separation. experimentally rod sphere where these transitions occur by systematically varying size ratios L/R D/R aspect ratio L/D. This was done different radii modifying effective through either ionic buffer or anchoring a polymeric brush surface rods. observed were from binary fluid gas/liquid coexistence that occurred already at very low due efficiency highly anisotropic measured obtained (FVT), well established for calculating behavior particles mixed depletants. find good correspondence between experimental theoretical FVT model excluded depletants explicitly accounted both reservoir system.

Depletion potentials in colloidal mixtures of spheres and rods

We calculate the depletion potential between two hard spheres of radii Rs and that between one hard sphere and a planar hard wall in a sea of hard rigid spherocylindrical rods of length L and radius Rr . Unlike earlier studies our approach takes into account the true geometry of the problem and gives, to first order in the rod density, the exact depletion potential for all values of Rs , L, and...

Density functional theory for colloidal mixtures of hard platelets, rods, and spheres.

A geometry-based density-functional theory is presented for mixtures of hard spheres, hard needles, and hard platelets; both the needles and platelets are taken to be of vanishing thickness. Geometrical weight functions that are characteristic for each species are given, and it is shown how convolutions of pairs of weight functions recover each Mayer bond of the ternary mixture and hence ensure...

Phase behavior of mixtures of rods (tobacco mosaic virus) and spheres (polyethylene oxide, bovine serum albumin).

Aqueous suspensions of mixtures of the rodlike virus tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) with globular macromolecules such as polyethylene oxide (PEO) or bovine serum albumin (BSA) phase separate and exhibit rich and strikingly similar phase behavior. Isotropic, nematic, lamellar, and crystalline phases are observed as a function of the concentration of the constituents and ionic strength. The observed ...

Clustering-Induced Attraction in Granular Mixtures of Rods and Spheres

Depletion-induced aggregation of rods enhanced by clustering is observed to produce a novel model of attractive pairs of rods separated by a line of spheres in a quasi-2D, vertically-shaken, granular gas of rods and spheres. We show that the stability of these peculiar granular aggregates increases as a function of shaking intensity. Velocity distributions of spheres inside and outside of a pai...

Nematic phase transitions in mixtures of thin and thick colloidal rods.

We report experimental measurements of the phase behavior of mixtures of thin (charged semiflexible fd virus) and thick (fd-PEG, fd virus covalently coated with polyethylene glycol) rods with diameter ratio varying from 3.7 to 1.1. The phase diagrams of the rod mixtures reveal isotropic-nematic, isotropic-nematic-nematic, and nematic-nematic coexisting phases with increasing concentration. In s...
